Cowboys in Paradise

The musings of two 21st-century cowboys from Kendall County, Texas.

Cowboy Neil
Cowboy Neil

Thirty-something widower, proud father of two fine young men, just tryin' to find my way in this life. The road has been rough at times, but no more than any other. I am an eternal optimist, and I believe that it all works together for the good.

Cpt. Kirk
Captain Kirk, USMC

Yes, my name really is James T. Kirk. Not only that but I was a Captain in the US Marines! My parents were some of the original Trekkies, and I was born in 1969. I didn't have a chance. I'll try to add a little color to the commentary here.

Andrew Sullivan Is An Idiot

Sully is still on his "Christianist" rampage. "Christianist," of course, refers pretty much to anyone who doesn't agree with his stance on gay marriage for religious reasons. The "-ist" suffix is meant to infer that fundamentalist Christians are the moral equivalent of murderous Islamic radicals, often referred to as "Islamists."

This time, he's pointing to the Left Behind videogame as evidence of an agenda by the murderous Christian radicals*.

I am a Christian, though somewhat lapsed, but I will say this: Christian videogames, like Christian movies and much of Christian music, are usually of embarrassingly low quality. However, I don't think that Left Behind: the Videogame is a sign of the coming holy war against the gay "infidel."

I have yet to see a substantial movement among Christians to suicide bomb DNC headquarters or kill the NOW leadership. I have yet to hear fatwas issued regularly from pulpits across America calling for the deaths of all card-carrying members of the ACLU. The author of The daVinci Code has yet to go into hiding for fear of his life.

I do, however, see calls to love your neighbor, whether a believer or not. I see the church and Christian aid organizations coming to the aid of those in need (see Hurricane Katrina or the Indonesian tidal wave), whether gay, straight, Muslim, Jew or atheist.

Sullivan seems to be the kind of person who would conflate Fred Phelps** and his ilk with Christianity. I can't think of a single follower of Jesus Christ who isn't disgusted with such blasphemous, ugly behavior.

Yes, there are people who claim the name of Christ who are vile, hate-filled people. There are also people who claim the label of Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, gay, straight, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, white, black, hispanic, American, French, Iranian , etc., who are vile, hate-filled people as well. The majority of any of these groups, however, are decent average people. Name any group of people, and there will be a fringe that is absolutely not representative.

To conflate any group with the actions of a minority of that group is ridiculous. Do Howard Dean and Michael Moore represent the majority of Democrats? I hope not. Does Pat Robertson represent the majority of Christians? Yeah, right. How's the weather on your planet?

Andrew, I used to respect your opinion. But if you're going to see everything through the "they don't agree with gay marriage so they must be evil" filter, then any sense you once had has left the building.

Peace, out.
